Unlocking Magnesium’s Power and the Truth About Animal Foods

Jan 27, 2025

#1 The Case for Animal Foods

I've been wanting to write a post about the necessity of animal foods in the human diet for quite some time. There are 3 key arguments that are everywhere in the media and "internets" in effort to convince people to stop eating meat: it's killing the environment, it's killing you, and you can't kill it.

I already wrote at length about the environmental perspective in a blog post. And I hope to soon address the ethical perspective. But right now, I'd like to focus on the nutritional necessity of meat and animal foods in the human diet.

You know, for the past 30-40 years we've been told to cut back on meat, to eat only lean meat, and eat white, skinless, boneless meat. Anything else is sure to kill you. And more recently, the message is simply that all meat is bad.

But the biggest irony of all this is that now we're suffering the consequences of decades of poor nutritional advice - so companies are now selling those nutrients back to us in highly processed, (expensive!!), denatured, and disconnected forms: collagen powders for our skin, hair, and nails, (because we're no longer eating meat or skin on the bone), protein powders (because we've been told not to eat meat, or cut back significantly, and we're getting weaker as a result), and a ton of supplements (because all our foods are highly processed, and void of key vitamins and minerals). There's something inherently messed up, unethical, and dystopian about this.

Have you noticed this as well? Do you see the illogical truth of this?

The discouragement of eating meat has become so pervasive, it has taken on a moral dimension, making lots of people feel consuming this absolutely vital macronutrient is 'wrong.'

Please help me make it stop. We're getting sicker as a nation and as a species as a result.

Anyhow, check out my new article on this topic - I go into detail about the critical nutrients that we get from animal foods. Please share the article with friends and family that are shunning meat and animal foods if you think it might help them.

#2 Magnesium - Why You Should Care

Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral that’s essential for over 300 functions in your body, yet many of us are running low on it. Why? Our modern, sugar-laden diets are a big culprit. It takes a lot of magnesium to process sugar, so the more sweets we consume, the more we deplete our magnesium reserves.

So maybe cut back on the sugar to start...

And for the best magnesium bang for your buck, focus on foods like fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, and halibut), which are rich in magnesium and other essential nutrients. Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are excellent plant-based sources with lower levels of anti-nutrients. Leafy greens like kale and collard greens provide magnesium along with a host of other vitamins and minerals. And also avocados, a versatile and magnesium-rich superfood. Yay, guac!

If you'd rather take a supplement, try the glycinate or L-threonate versions. Citrate is great too, but too much can have a laxative-like effect. About 150-200 milligrams is a good starting point. But check with your healthcare provider before starting, just in case...

Try some of the nutrient-dense foods mentioned to enhance your mental health, sleep better, and feel more balanced overall. Your body—and mind—will thank you!

Issue 20 | Gut Feelings
Reframing Picky Eating: From Survival Mode to Nourishment Picky Eating Is a Symptom Picky eating is often treated as a behavior to be corrected, something to work around with tricks and therapy. But in my practice, picky eating is a message from the body. It’s a symptom. A sign that the system doesn’t feel safe. That the gut is inflamed. That the nervous system is protecting instead of engagin...
